I didn’t really understand her very well at first, but I love her just as much as Tamako and Kanna. I suspect a lot of my rewatch will be focused on Midori. Just because he's normalized doesn't mean he's not annoying sometimes though. Perhaps his constant attitude of being an oddball helps in some way, as he's never really that normal from a character perspective, distracting us from the whole talking animal thing. hesitant acceptance, bringing the audience with her. Tamako does pointedly ask about it, but the cut immediately following the title card frames Tamako's discussion with Dera as a. It’s a standout in a field of stars though, every performance in the show is great.Įver find it interesting how some stories set in otherwise normal modern settings deal with normalizing extraordinary elements? There’s lots of ways to do it, but Tamako takes the 'roll with it' strategy and it's remarkable how fast a fat talking bird just begins to make sense. Her VA is really good, Tamako is one of my favorite performances I’ve had the pleasure of hearing. Reading this thread has reminded me of how much fun it was last year though, so let's go! I'm not sure I have much to say for every episode but there are a few things I have earmarked for discussion later on, and I'm looking forward to everyone's thoughts! I'm late today because I wasn't sure if I was going to join - usually I hold off for a little while before revisiting things. Tomorrow is a Valentine's episode, so maybe Mochizou can at least get a moment or a good conversation with Tamako, since he's obviously crushing on her. Kinda wish she hadn't tried to feed Dera that fresh mochi so that she could've had a proper birthday celebration and Mochizou could have finally given her a birthday present for once. It's too real though the way he accidentally gains a bunch of weight snacking on mochi.Īs someone who has multiple family members with birthdays between December 30th and January 1st, I can appreciate the trouble in having a New Year's Eve birthday. He's just a bit annoying right now, but that doesn't seem like a mistake so much as something that might grow on me. I appreciate that the show's going full on supernatural with him and everybody can hear and understand him from the get go. I can't wait to see her interact more with everyone. I can already kinda see why everyone in the market loves her so much, she's such a good girl. Well that was a delightful first episode! I already really like Tamako, she seems like a very unshakably happy girl. Q: So far so good, what worked is setting a reachable goal instead of trying to do something life changing. Interesting parallel between Anko and Dera here in this episode in that Anko wants to change her name and everyone else doesn't, but they want to change Dera's name but he doesn't. And more importantly, real people who I'd want to meet and be friends with. One episode in and they all feel like real people. The choking scene was hilarious and characterized the other shop owners pretty well, too. It's clear she was a major part of the shopping district by how much they all love Tamako, but also by the shopkeeper's reaction when they mention her. Love the attention to detail when Tamako's mom is brought up. I wonder how much the two dads really don't get along and how much is just playing it up considering everyone in the market gets along? And also how Mochizou's dad feels about him calling Tamako's dad his father. We see this is a shopping district she shops a lot in as she gets stamp #27/50 on her card, of course! It's her home! Along the way, she gets the Book of Birds, forehsadowing keeping the bird. What I and a lot of other love about Tamako is just how genuine she is. Despite knowing about the annual rewatch, I couldn't stop myself after the first episode. I watched Tamako the first time the middle of last year.

It is, in early moments, a slightly baffling setup selecting a unit and its destination is done with taps, yet the quickest way to shift the view is with the analogue options, meaning a one-handed stylus effort while holding the controller. Battlefields can be navigated with a mix of touch and button inputs, with camera movement that can also be controlled with the analogue sticks. Developer 3 Sprockets and publisher Nnooo have done an admirable job on a technical level, but importantly have also served up an entertaining real-time strategy title that's relatively unique on Nintendo's store.Īn important details for those interested in Cubemen 2 is that it is entirely dependent on the GamePad and its touch screen. While Pure Chess became the first cross-platform multiplayer title on Nintendo eShop stores, Cubemen 2 arrives with a far more complex and potentially rewarding setup. ![]() This story was provided to The Associated Press by the automotive website Edmunds. The Toyota Sienna stumbles just a bit in both areas, which gives the Honda Odyssey a photo-finish victory. The difference makers are ultimately drivability and interior versatility. The Sienna's ride quality is generally OK but gets overly bouncy and floaty over larger bumps.ĮDMUNDS SAYS: Minivan shoppers will find plenty to like from both the Honda Odyssey and the Toyota Sienna. That said, the Sienna has enough guts for most driving situations thanks to the hybrid battery torque. Its engine is loud when it's working its hardest, and you'll feel the comparative lack of power on freeway on-ramps or when going up grades. The Toyota drives awkwardly at times, as the regenerative brakes decide how best to react. Remember that standout fuel economy? It comes at a cost. The Sienna hybrid requires a little adjustment. The ride is agreeable over both small and large bumps in the road. Around town the Honda is as easy to drive as it is on the highway. The V6 and automatic transmission work well together, and there always seems to be enough power to do what you need to. Here's our expert take.īehind the wheel of the Odyssey, things are simple. For any vehicle, assessment of the ride often comes down to personal preference. Perhaps the biggest difference between the Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey is how they drive. The Sienna's second-row seats are no longer removable. You can also take out the Odyssey's second-row seats for maximum cargo capacity, though they're heavy and bulky. They even have optional extendable footrests.įor hauling cargo, both minivans have third-row seats that are easy to fold down. Toyota offers second-row seats in the Sienna that slide backward more than the Odyssey's. The Odyssey has second-row seats that slide side to side, which helps with third-row access. Toyota doesn't offer one of those but counters with an optional refrigerator built into the center console, plus an optional surround-view camera system for easier parking. Honda has an optional in-cabin camera system that displays a view of the rear passengers on the touchscreen. The interior is also a chance for differentiation. Even smartphone integration, intercoms and built-in vacuums are the norm on higher trims. Both vans have seven- and eight-passenger configurations, spacious cabins, comfortable and versatile seats, storage space galore and many kid-friendly touches. The Sienna's higher fuel economy means saving more at the gas pump, too. But Toyota does offer additional coverage: eight years/100,000 miles on hybrid components, 10 years/150,000 miles for the hybrid battery and two years/25,000 miles of free scheduled maintenance. Overall, the features, and what you pay to get them, are similar throughout the trim level ranges.īasic and powertrain warranty coverage are also similar. At $48,940, the Elite trim is as good as an Odyssey gets. Want a luxed-out minivan? A fully equipped Sienna Platinum with all-wheel drive costs a little more than $51,000. The Odyssey's next step up, the $36,310 EX trim, is more comparable to the Sienna's base LE. That's a significant savings, but you're not getting as many features either. The 2021 Odyssey LX has a lower entry price of $32,910. The 2021 Sienna starts at $35,635 (including destination) for an LE with front-wheel drive. Toyota even offers all-wheel drive, which is something you can't get on the Odyssey. After driving several hundred miles, Edmunds experts recorded multiple tanks over 40 mpg in a Sienna. It trades away some power ― it has 245 horsepower ― in return for a big boost in fuel efficiency. The Sienna, in contrast, has a four-cylinder engine and a hybrid system with a continuously variable transmission. Fuel economy is an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in combined city/highway driving, which is an average figure for a modern minivan. The Odyssey uses a 280-horsepower V6 engine paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Most notably, every Sienna is now a hybrid, which completely changes the game for fuel economy.Įdmunds pitted the Sienna against the Odyssey to find out which one is the better minivan. The new 2021 Sienna brings a lot to the table in its hope to oust the Honda. ![]() This year a familiar nameplate receives a full redesign: the Toyota Sienna. For the northern tower a specific operation based on the use of 3D printed models was brought on to bring to an end the debate about the sequence of the fall of the tower, quite important to the digital reconstruction of this building, the direct manipulation of a scaled model turned out to be a fundamental step for the completion of this part of the research.įrom, the contents of Studies in Digital Heritage are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC 4.0). The use of 3D modeling of all the lost parts, from the houses to the defense walls, to the system of towers was one of the focal point in this work, using the modeling process from the survey and supporting the reconstruction hypothesis with previous archaeological data, while matching the missing parts with similar architectures and the needs of the medieval defense/attack techniques. The general survey plan has seen the use of aerial photogrammetric survey, 3D laser scanner survey and terrestrial photogrammetry. In 2015 the municipality of Camaiore commissioned a complete digital survey to the Dipartimento di Architettura in Florence. A quite extended village was placed on the southern side of the hill. At the time of its major development the small fortress was organized around two main towers, with walls and various houses. In the first half of the XIII century, the castle of Montecastrese was conquered and destroyed by the army of Lucca. The archaeologists brought back to light the traces of the fortress and of the village, exploring the monumental ruins of the northern tower, still in place and tumbled down in two main large parts. In the XX century, after being forgotten for centuries, a series of archaeological excavations have brought to light the settlement, named “Montecastrese”, a system of Medieval fortifications organized on the top of a hill near the town of Camaiore, on the Tirreno sea. Ultimately though, I thought that The City of Ember was a tale about hope, courage, determination and selflessness in the face of a crisis. I would have liked to learn a little more about them, and perhaps they will play a bigger role in future books in the series. ![]() There is a bit of a spiritual aspect to the story as well in the form of The Believers who are essentially the religious pulse of Ember. I also think there was a morality tale embedded in The City of Ember that explored the idea that there is both light and dark inside each one of us, and which we choose to follow can affect not only ourselves but those around us too. DuPrau stated that the remaining mysteries would be revealed in the next book of the series, The People of Sparks. Some of these details were disclosed by the end of the book and others were not, but Ms. Trying to figure out the mystery of what and where Ember is and why it was created was a lot of fun. I also thought I detected a bit of an environmental message in the story, mainly fueled by Lina and Doon's fascination with the things of nature, which was also something that Jeanne DuPrau said she hoped would be conveyed in her narrative. Having grown up in an older house that had a bomb shelter, I could definitely relate. My sense of this theme was confirmed when I read on the author's website that part of her inspiration for the novel was her experiences growing up in the 1950's when many people were concerned about a possible nuclear war and were building bomb shelters just in case. It has a rather post-apocalyptic feel to it with a little government conspiracy on the side, although since this is a children's book, it wasn't nearly as dark as most stories of that type. It is essentially part science fiction, part fantasy with healthy doses of adventure, suspense, and mystery thrown in for good measure. I found The City of Ember to be a very entertaining read that is somewhat difficult to categorize. But when the pair discover incriminating things about the mayor of Ember that he doesn't want anyone to know, they find themselves in a race against time to solve the riddle and save the entire city before disaster strikes. Lina turns to her old friend, Doon, for help, and the two begin to piece together the puzzle which may bring the answers everyone has been seeking. Lina is left with the scrambled bits of a message that she feels could be very important to the survival of Ember's citizens, but without knowing what it says, she cannot be certain. When Lina's elderly Granny starts rambling about something she's forgotten and frantically rummaging through the closet, Lina discovers an old box with a note inside, but before she can get to it, her baby sister, Poppy, tries to eat the paper. In the meantime, Lina, in her new job as a messenger, is beginning to learn the frightening truth of the supply situation in Ember. ![]() Doon is proficient with mechanical things and thinks that if he can just get a look at the generator, he might be able to fix it and stop the terrifying blackouts that one day are sure to become permanent. ![]() Doon asks Lina to trade jobs, and she happily does so, giving Doon the opportunity to work far underground in the Pipeworks where the generator is located. When Assignment Day comes for Doon, Lina Mayfleet and all their former school classmates who are now graduating into the workforce, Doon and Lina both draw jobs that are the opposite of what they wanted. No one really knows what to do, but young Doon Harrow knows that he must do something. Along the way, the instructions for leaving the city were lost, and now the generator is wearing out and supplies are running low. It is run entirely by electricity produced by a huge generator, but the city was only intended to operate for 200 years. The Builders created the city of Ember as a last bastion for humankind. Even the lower-end machines tested here should do that for the first generation of VR games and apps, but you may want to invest in more than the minimum required specs to be assured of a smooth experience in the more intensive VR games coming in the future.īased on extensive hands-on testing in the CNET Labs, the sweet spot for price and performance is right around $2,000, which will cover a current-gen Core i7-6700K processor and a single Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 graphics card, plus a decent amount of hard-drive space for large game files. If you're looking to spend more, the sky's the limit, and we've tested PCs that cost north of $4,000 (as mentioned earlier, all prices discussed here are in US dollars).įor both the Oculus and Vive headsets, the system requirements are built around maintaining a steady 90 frames of animation per second, per eye. That also means even a new gaming laptop that cost thousands won't work, unless it's one of a very small handful of laptops that squeezes in a stripped-down version of the desktop Nvidia 980 graphics card.Īnd while the rock-bottom price for a new VR-ready desktop is still around $999, that's only after a bundled discount from Oculus for buying a headset and desktop together. Required system specs include a recent Intel Core i5 or Core i7 CPU, and a desktop graphics card - at least an Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 or AMD R9 290. Unless you're going for the minimum required spec, it's an upgrade worth considering (and we'll be testing some 1080-based PCs in the near future).įor anyone interested in virtual reality, the takeaways above are important to keep in mind, as the PC you have today probably won't run either the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive, unless it's a fairly recent tricked-out gaming desktop. Should you buy now, or wait for the next generation of components? There's always something new around the corner, but this is a good moment to take stock, as Nvidia's new GeForce 1080 graphics cards are, or will soon be, available as an option in most of the systems listed below. If you're an upgrader, make sure the desktop you choose has easy tool-free access to the interior. Do you want a huge, floor-hogging tower? Then be prepared to make space for it. Do you want a PC that's as small as possible? If so, there are a couple of smaller chassis options, but those require trade-offs in terms of expansion and available configuration options. There are many design and feature options to keep in mind.Virtual reality software needs to run at a steady 90 frames per second per eye, but even the least-expensive desktops tested here worked well with every VR app we tried. Unlike many PC gaming experiences, just hitting the minimum required specs will actually give you a good experience, at least with the first couple of generations of VR games and apps. The Oculus Rift and HTC Vive headsets cost $599 and $799, respectively, and the PCs required to run them start at $999 and go up from there (all prices discussed here are in US dollars). ![]() Now that we've tested nine new PCs (eight desktops and one laptop) specifically built for use with virtual reality headsets, there are a few key takeaways: |
